London 2012- The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are drawing closer. With less than a couple of month's to go. This time they are being held in London and cities throughout England. Already most of the venues are ready for use including the Cycling Velodrome in Surrey, which was opened last week with much fanfare by chairman of London 2012 former 100 metre champion Lord Sebastian Coe. London has hosted the Olympic Games on two past occasions, in 1908 and 1948, with a third scheduled for 2012. The planned 2012 Olympics will make London the first city to have hosted the modern Games of three Olympiads

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will use a mixture of new venues, existing and historic facilities, and temporary facilities, some of them in well-known locations such as Hyde Park and Horse Guards Parade In the wake of the problems that plagued the Millennium Dome

Dara Torres

The great American Swimmer Dara Torres too will be attempting a record Olympic return to London in 2012. Torres has won twelve Olympic medals (four gold, four silver, four bronze), five of which she won in the 2000 Summer Olympics, a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that, at age 33, she was the oldest member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Swim Team. Should Dara Torres manage to qualify for London 2012 she will without any doubt be the most outstanding Olympian of all time.

I expect world records will fall during the 2012 Games . England is traditionally strong in Athletics especially at home.  As such I expect competitors from the United Kingdom to  be especially prepared and talented for London in 2012.  No doubt the Americans will be superior but watch the World record making rivalry to come to the fore in the track and field events.  In addition I expect cycling to be  popular and exciting. with World records expected to tumble in both road and track events.

As far as Australia goes there are a number of former Olympic Gold medal winning Swimmers attempting to make a comeback and qualify for the London Olympics in 2012. Amongst the most famous is three time Olympic Gold Medal winner and multiple world record holder Ian Thorpe. Ian Thorpe announced his retirement from competitive swimming in 2004 at the ripe old age of 23 years old. He has won five Olympic gold medals, the most won by any Australian, and with three gold and two silver medals, was the most successful athlete at the 2000 Summer Olympics. At the 2001 World Aquatics Championships, he became the first person to win six gold medals in one World Championship. Thorpe has been in some kind of training for around 12 months and announced in February he was going to attempt to qualify for selection for London 2012. He has some work to do but with his make up and experience one would have to say he is more than half way there.

Also making a comeback for Australian Swimming is Olympian Libby Trickett. Geoff Huegillmade a comeback to the Commonwealth Games last year. In doing so he had to lose 30 kilos in weight. Put in twice daily training sessions . The gamble paid off and he won the Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games. He now too has his sights set on London 2012.

Many of the Olympic Competition events will  be held outside of London such as Manchester,  Newcastle on Tyne,  Hampden Park in Scotland and Cardiff in Wales.

London 2012 Advice 10 months ago

Thoroughly looking forward to the Olympics. I've had plenty of friends who are having trouble getting somewhere to live whilst in London though. My advice to you all is that, as your ticket gives you free transport across the city, stay a bit further out. That way you'll save on accommodation too.

Our sports people are some of the most passionate sports people in the world. We have a super strong swimming team but I am looking forward most to our successes on the track and field.

Thanks Barry with all that is happening around us at the moment I'd forgotten about the Olympic Games-2012.

It is great to see our swimmers making a come-back. Especially Ian Thorpe, I thought that he retired way too early.

I believe I heard that Michael Klim was also thinking about having another 'go'?

Rated up :-)
