How to use Twitter. Was the use of Twitter to announce an exicution an abuse of Twitter?. Well I did! When the Internet is used to post the imminent death of a person by the state It is so so wrong! I Could get into the death penalty debate- I have done that elsewhere.] Web sites & governments worry about about posting of porn, Yet it seems we are now going to allow public servants namely a Governor to post the announcement on 'Twitter Live' that they have given the order to shoot a prisoner. My god what is more horrible than that? It is bad enough that a so called civilised Western Society such as the United States still has the Death Penalty on its statute books that allows executions. But to allow a prisoner to choose the form of his death and then a Governor announce the signal to shoot is beyond the pale. I believe the the Governor has breached Twitter rules as follows

Twitter terms & conditions of use

Violence and Threats: You may not publish or post direct, specific threats of violence against others.

Is using Twitter by the Governor of Utah to annnounce an execution an abuse of Twitters site?

Today the Governor of Utah used to Twitter to announce that he had given the go or the green light for the execution firing squad to pull their collective triggers.

MarkShurtleff We will be streaming live my press conference as soon as I'm told Gardner is dead. Watch it at www.attorneygeneral.Utah.gov/live.html

Is this the way a governor should inform members of the public. I find it offensive an I think many others would think so too. I hope the management at twitter think so too !

The Tweet which was retweeted around the world

"I just gave the go ahead to Corrections Director to proceed with Gardner's execution. May God grant him the mercy he denied his victims."

State of Utah

The US has carried out its first execution by firing squad in 14 years. This occurred in the State of Utah.

Convicted murderer Ronnie Lee Gardner, who had spent 25 years on death row, was executed soon after midnight local time (0600 GMT), after a final appeal had been rejected.

Gardner, 49, chose the firing squad before Utah banned the method in 2004. Critics say it is barbaric, harking back to the Wild West.

Gardner was only the third man put to death in this way in the US since 1976.

He was convicted in 1985 of fatally shooting a lawyer during an attempt to escape from a court where he was facing another murder charge dating from 1984.

I agree entirely Rastas

I get an overwhelming feeling of the disregard for the value of life by preempting the death on Twitter.. There is a real "ickiness" factor to this. My immediate response is #tacky!

I agree with you this is a barbaric act but also we are now living in a very desensitized society where nothing surprises anyone and any teenager can watch the goriest movie out there without even flinching so it doesn't surprise me even though this twitter announcement is wrong on so many levels. Great hub. Cheers.

Too bad loud mouthed, lying, stealing, cheating, war monging, hyoocrit public officials can't get the death penalty. Talk about the real world of crime. The criminals that sit in public office should be put in front of a firing squad.

Yes and it was retweeted by about thirteen others so he is not alone in his views !

lisadpreston 23 months ago

He said that about you? What a jerk, and to think he is a governor. He sounds more like a bully on a school playground. We wonder why our youth is so violent. Well here you have it. We have authority figures promoting violence and murder on public venues. What a disgrace.

How about this the Govenor of Utah has posted on his Twitter site that If I can stand the heat get out of Twitter !

lisadpreston 23 months ago

I am sickened by this but not at all surprised. The U.S. is far from being a civilized society in all aspects. You know how i feel about the death penalty and and this twitter crap is disturbing on all levels. It amazes me how that people have become so desensitized to death. Thank you for being a fellow voice for what is right.

It has to be wrong.A disgrace

I don't know that it is an abuse of Twitter, but, yes, definitely disgusting.

You'd think Republicans would be against the death penalty because it usually costs much more than life imprisonment (cost of appeals), but no, they are gun-ho.

Shinkicker 23 months ago

I totally agree Barry

To use Twitter like this is appalling.

Well done for posting this Hub

Dearest Barry,

Your sensitivities are correct; it was/is barbaric for the U.S. to still have a death penalty . . . It is common knowledge that a full 1/3 of all prisoners executed in the U.S. could not have committed the crime . . . discoverd AFTER the fact by advances in DNA testing . . .

That the Govenor announced it on Twitter also sent me over the top . . . What was that man thinking?? . . . Or, more obviously, he wasn't thinking about anything except himself . . .

Which is the underlying cause for the death penalty . . .

Thanks for getting up in arms about this one . . . pun intended . . .

Blessings, EarthAngel . . .

Only a person wholly lacking in sensitivity would use Twitter in this way. However, that abuse is insignificant compared to the act itself, of State killing.

This was a great hub. There is no way it is right to announce the death of someone on Twitter. You face the cameras straight on when you have to do something such as that. I think it's a little cowardly. But if you are a public official sometimes it comes with the territory. This whole ordeal was just awful.

Thanks for your comment Tony

The age of barbarism is still very much with us. This is just appalling! This in the country which claims to be the greatest in the world, the leading democracy, etc., etc. I am left speechless with horror!

Love and peace

Tony
