Sixties

Sixties- One of the great things about being a child is listening to the stories your parents and or other relatives such as gradparents tell you. As a young boy living in Yorkshire ! was told true stories, myths and fantasies. One of the things I do remember distinctly true is my mum tuning into to a 'Bush' brand Radio on Sunday's listening to a BBC broadcast called 'Family favourites'. What is was was a show where 'expat' British people serving and living overseas could write in to the show and have read out requests and have greeting broadcast over the radio. Hosted by popular presenters Jean Metcalf and Cliff Michelmore it became a popular British institution. A typical broadcast would go something like this. "And our next request goes out to Mr & Mrs Ellis and family from Huddersfield in Yorkshire they are currently stationed at RAF Butterworth in Malaysia They sent their love to their friends and family back in Yorkshire especially to their Grandson's and Nieces back in Netherton; For you we have a tune to remember by Acker Bilk: Stranger on the Shore." and so it went on week after week different people different hit songs.. You must remember I was only about Seven at the time so it is interesting how I got into the show at such a young age and I remember it so long ago may be this was one of the influences that made me migrate to Australia. After the show finished we would all sit down to Sunday dinner: a Roast of Yorkshire Pudding beef or chicken, veggies, bread sauce, sage and onion stuffing, and apple sauce. I used to help mum make the sauces. & help by scraping out, 'testing' by eating the remainder of the mixes.

Another memory I have of the time is all the British bands that exploded onto the pop and radio shows back then, The Beatles,The Rolling stones and other such as Freddie And the dreamers. and other such as The Dave Clark Five. You can listen to them on the YouTube video on my then favourite children's TV show 'Blue Peter.'Freddie & the Dreamers singing "You were made for me." the Blue Peter children's programme was one of my favourite TV shows along with Dixon of Dock Green & Z Cars. The Presenters of Blue Peter Valerie Singleton, John Noakes and Peter Purves are the one's that I most remember.

Of course even though Britain 'Won' the Second World war as the story goes Britain itself was subject to austere rationing for several years after the war ended. I should know because my father worked as a Rations Clerk. He was unable to engage in military service due to the contraction of Tuberculosis.(T.B.)
Dadused to tell me many a yarn about people trying to bribe him to give them more things and not stamp their ration card. He worked in Hull which was a city that was subject to Blitz bombing because of its vital port where supplies were delivered. Incredibly many of the building that were destroyed or damaged were left derelict for decades afterwards..
